- There are many old crafts which people have throughout the country. They have been handed down from father to son and from family to family for generations. They are mainly industry sin themselves. Up to a few years ago a lot of the old crafts have been forgotten by the people and now they are not carries on at all. Many years ago there were old crafts in this district but they are nearly all forgotten. But there are some crafts which the people have still but it is in the country districts that they are mostly carried on.
There are not as many old crafts carrot don by the people in and around the vicinity of Athlone as there used to be in years gone by. That should not be as there is a lot of money to be got out of crafts if people only worked them properly. Now a days people are too proud of themselves to work at crafts as they say there is no money to be made on them. If there was a person selling baskets or 'sciffs" the neighbours would make a laugh of him or perhaps put a nickname on him.
The best-known crafts are lime during, basket making and boat building. This last craft is carried on by many people in Athlone. It is a convenient and an ideal town for boat building as it is situated on the banks of the Shannon. During the summer months(continues on next page)
