    Candlemas, "a candle less". On that morning wax candles are blessed in the Roman Catholic Churches. These are lighted in the homes at stations, when the Priest attends the sick and when a person is dying.
    "Candlemas a candle less on St. Patrick's day throw candle and candlestick away and eat your supper in the light of the day" as an old remark.

    On Shrove Tuesday bacon and cabbage is the usual fate at dinner. (The Irishman's meal). On that evening a big batter of eggs and flour are made into pancakes, the ring is mixed in the batter. Whoever gets the pancake with the ring is supposed to soon get a proposal of marriage. The Sunday before lent is common by called "Puss Sunday".
