  2. Rope-Making

    Tom Whelan - Friarstown Dalystown was a rope maker. He made them from some sort of wood - perhaps sally or bog dale. He made something like shavings of the wood and twisted them into robes. They used to make the frames of beds from these ropes - the irons and wire mattresses as we have now. This is 100 ago. This man is about 40 years dead.

    Who married his daughter to a soap-maker
    The fortune he gave her was 20 ropes
    There was 20 knots on every rope
    And 20 purses on every knot
