    When dark October moans along
    The naked hill and valley,
    I sadly watch the evening sun
    In pensive melancholy,
    To think these trees and withered fields
    Their verdure will recover;
    But youth once o'er will come no more,
    And mine, alas, is over.

    Yet, though the hoary tinge of years
    Is o'er my temples stealing,
    Tho' day by day departs for age
    Some dear long chrerished feeling
    Old friends to meet and warmly greet,
    Can vanished joys recover,
    Till even yet I half forget
    That my summer days are over
