   valuable old horses of the country were sold there. Goats were also sold there as the old people used to call them their hedge clippers. They were also sold like the pigs for shipping also luck pennies were given for them. The local horse fair we have now is in Drogheda which is held every three months.

2. The Local Fairs

   The local fairs are held chiefly in the large towns but in the grazing districts all the villages generally hold a fair once a month and especially in the Royal County of Meath where the farmers make their living chiefly by grazing.
   The buying or selling of stock was always held at the fairs where the farmers used to enjoy themselves drinking on that day, but now-a-days buyers usually come to the farms and buy the stock with the result that fairs are steadily on the decline. The fairs are held in specially prepared places such as fair greens or paddocks except in the small
