    clear "tap tap" on the road in front of him. The hair stood bristling on his head with fright and beads of sweat burst on his forehead. He stood still and immediately the tapping stopped. Thinking it was only imagination he started off again and again the distinct "tap tap" sounded through the night. This was his undoing. He suddenly plucked up courage and rushed forward with his stick upraised ready to break the "ghosts" head with it, but to his surprise and amazement got the full force of an ass's hooves on his stomach.
    Dumbfounded and speechless he stood for a moment not knowing what to do. It struck him that the "ghost" would again surprise him if he did not clear out of its way. He took to his heels and was home in record time. He was never again heard to say that he would defy a ghost.
