The Spoilbank is situated beside a branch of the Great Northern Railway between Navan and Drogheda, which runs through Knockcommon, and it is said that when the railway was being made that the bank was knocked down and the shape of the field was spoiled, and ever afterwards it was called the Spoilbank.

The railway field was so called because it is situated beside the local railway. The river field is so called because it is beside the river. The moat field was so called because long ago there was a moat in the field which was believed to be inhabited by the fairies.
