Shebeens were public houses where porter and poitín were sold.

    (continued from previous page)
It was very strong and if one took too much of it he would be sick for weeks after. The old women that sold this were very like fairies. The people say that they were magic people.
One day a man was drinking stout and the woman asked for his money and he told her to wait until he was finished. She wanted to get the money but he would not give it to her.
She said she would turn him into a hare if he would not give it to her. She turned him into a hare and nobody ever went back to the house again. The man's name was Donaghy and they were McGeeney's. They were powerful magicians.
