Cortbane was so called from a "court" erected in Courtbane Bog as a shooting lodge, by Lord Boyne who was the owner of the whole district.
When he sold Courtbane, he sold it in 3 lots. The Mc Ardles bought one lot and divided it among themselves, O'Callaghan a landlord of Rassan and Clonalig bought the second lot, and the Agnews bought the third. The Agnew family is descended from a butler in Lord Boyne's service and is said to have been a scotchman.
Courtbane was previously known as Crucha Donna (pron. crocka dong)
Some place-names in the district are:
Páirc na gCorp at Peter Hanratty's
    Mahey Height at Nicholas Murtagh's
Garraidhe Bog Swamp near Sheelagh R.C.C.
Gleann Dearga Stretching E. from Sheelagh R.C.C.
The Badhbhán Ruins of old houses at P. Morgan's
The Neannadh Swampy part of Rassan Bog near Paddy Coy's.
The Cárr-cradh or Tairrchradh A cluster of houses of Courtbane, many ow in ruins, where there was a "Commons" field. Houses now owned by James Mc Ardle, Francis Lafferty and John Lafferty.
