  1. Some long years ago in the penal days on the road leading from Elphin to Roscommon, there stood a tall dark mansion where a protestant man named Ross lived. This man was held in great repute by his neighbours. He used to gather a great crows once or twice a year to play cards and enjoy themselves.
    One very wet, dark and stormy night, he had a great party around his table in his kitchen, and a great turf fire burning on the hearth when a loud knocking was heard at the door.
