- It was a custom in rural Ireland, and is so still in certain places, that one of the household - generally the father, went out before sunrise on May day morning, and brought in branches of as many plants or bushes that were in bloom, as he could conveniently get.
A spray of furze was always included. These were tied in a bundle and put up under a rafter of the house, and left there till the next year. This is called - Bringing in "the summer"
