   One of the oldest and most economic of all Irish industries was the home manufacture of linen now dead in most parts of Ireland. About fifty years ago almost everyone in Clare grew a plot of flax. The flax was pulled by hand before the seed was ripe. It was then "bogged" or submerged in bogwater for a time until it softened and then fibre separated from the holm. It was then dried and scutched, cloven, and hackled. Then it was carded and made into rolls. It was now ready for the spinner. The spinner sat at a small wheel, some
