    suitable for thatch. Then men turned specially to thatching so that it soon became an art. A thatchers outfit consisted of a long iron needle to sew the layers of straw to the rafters by means of tar-rope, a pairing knife to point the hazel sticks into position, a wooden rake with iron teeth for combing the straw, a shears for trimming the eaves. The straw was first pulled in long bundles until a sufficient quantity was obtained. The thatcher commenced by lay the straw at the bottoms of the eaves, by packing it firmly in regular breadth about twelve inches wide until he reaches the top. The layers
