The existence of a Parish Priest in Newport begins with the year 1704.

    (continued from previous page)
by a fugitive Archbishop of Cashel, Most Rev. E. Comerford. Fr O'Connell was a native of the Parish of Newport. He was the son of Philip O'Connell of Kylnacappa and was born there in 1667. He was thirty nine years old when we first hear of him in the parish, so we may assume that he was ministering there for a number of years before that. He laboured in this parish all through the first half of the 18th century, and died at Tour in 1761 att the age of eighty four. He lies buried near where the altar stood in the old church of Ballymckeogh.
