  1. In former days people in country places used to make candles of their own. They used to use tallow in the manufacture of them and in every house there was a mould for candle making. It was an old custom to kill a fat cow at Christmas and they used the fat off her to make candles and at that period lamps were not in general use and people had to stick to the candles for light.
