    opened. The North Cork Militia, who were following him, saw him with the white coat. They chased him around the Red Bog but he, knowing the place well, fooled them. A man named Walsh ran his horse into a bog in order not to be in the catching of the Staker. But a couple of men, who saw the hunt, chased him with a red terrier into a heap of briars near Kilfinane. He was brought to Kilfinane and courtmartialled and ordered to be scourged on three successive days. On the first day he was whipped. On the second day he got a scourging that one could see his heart beating inside. On the third day, when asked who were with him in the burning of the house he would not tell. He was tied to the back of a car, and ran through the town of Kilfinane. When this was done the captain said “I will bet a guinea he will tell this time”. He was scourged once more. Then the Staker said “Well captain, you will have lost your bet”. He was beheaded then and his head was placed on top of a gate. A lady, named
