  1. (continued from previous page)
    eat,
’Twas neither fish, flesh, feather or bone.
Riddle me that and leave me alone.
    Ans: An egg.
    Ready in the morning,
    I drank at a spring.
    Round was the cup,
    And gold was the ring.
    Through iron bars,
    And cold stone walls.
    If you riddle me that,
    I am condemned.
Ans: A drink from his mother’s breast through the iron bars.
As I went out my gable window
I saw the dead carrying the live.
    Ans: A train.
    Bessey inside the ditch,
    Bessey outside the ditch,
    And if you touch Bessey,
    She will pinch you.
    Ans: A nettle.
