and are made as relief work to this present day. The rates the people were paid for making the local Roads was a few shillings a day. There are a few paths and byeroads in the district. Two lead from the Clash road down to the River Gale and there are two others leading to Coole East from the Clash road. There are two places in the river Gale which are crossed by stepping stones, one is in the townland of Clash and the other is near the Village of Athea. It is said those fords there was a woman seen combing her hair. She had long curling yellow hair and he was crying. Another time there was a little man seen about 2 feet and he was singing and playing all sorts of fairy music. It was said that if you went near him he would change you into a fairy goat. In a few of the cross roads there are people buried and a heap of stones or earth to honour the memory of the dead. In some places in this district there are Mass Paths. There is one in Temple Athea, another in Clash South. There are caves still to be seen when Mass was said.
