  2. Hedge schools existed in this district in olden times. They were thatched houses in a field owned by the late Pat Maurice Woulfe, Keale, Athea. Another one is said to have been in a field owned by Maurice O'Connell, Knocknagorna, Athea. Indoor the pupils were taught. Teachers were the late Mr. O'Mahony, N.T. Mrs. Barrett N.T. Mrs. Condon, N.T. All those came from the district. Some of those had houses of their own, others lodges in the farmers houses. They were paid from the board of education as they are nowadays. English grammer, English geography, Arithmetic and english reading were the subjects taught. No Irish was taught or spoken. All English books were used.
