- There was once a man named Robert Cussen, who lived in Stokesfield, used to tell many a tale about the Big Wind. On a little Christmas night, the sixth of January 1839 great damage was done by a Big Wind. One of the stories that he used to tell was when he was sitting down at the fire, he heard the wind blowing against the door and windows of his little house and he was very much frightened, because he thought his house would be blown down.
Then a terrible gale of wind came and it blew one of the windows right in, and it landed on a table, without the glass been broken.
