  1. About the year 1595 a boy named, Beotius McEgan was born in Knockagolig in Curraghs. The same house in which he was born is still inhabited by some of his relatives, and is in good repair.
When this boy grew to the age of manhood he prepared for the church. He was ordained a priest and years late he was consecrated Bishop of Ross.
When the Irish were fighting against the Cromwellians Beotius McEgan fought and did his best to obtain freedom for the Irish people. The Cromwellians led by Broghill attacked the castle at Carraig a Droichead near Macroom where Beotius and his army were staying. Broghill asked the Bishop if he would order his soldiers to surrender and by doing so his own life would be spared. Beotius made no reply but returned to his army and told them to fight to the last man.
