  1. In the time of the penal laws the Irish catholics were compelled to pay tithes of all they possessed to support the protestant clergy. The irony of this state of affairs was that the Catholic priests were being killed and burned. A certain individual called a tithe proctor was appointed to collect these dues. This man met with much hostility on his rounds, and was very often ill-treated.
    The majority of the Catholics all over Ireland rebelled against paying the tithes. But the inhabitants of our own parish of Kilbrin were the first who refused absolutely to pay. On one Sunday the chief parishioners assembled together at Kilbrin cross bringing some tithes with them. They procured a rude box which
