In October the drill potatoes are ploughed out with a potato digger or with a drill plough. The ridge potatoes are dug with a spade, the good ones first been removed and the "waste" allowed to remain until later, when they are used as food for pigs and calves. The good ones beeing stored in pits, are earthed and thatched.
The early varieties of potatoes which are grown on our farm are Epicures, May Queens and Landleaguers (a Clare variety) The most common varieties are - Kerr's Pink, Irish Queens and Champions - the latter being a fine table potato.
Some smiths make spades but the most of them are made by machinery.
