It would then be covered with large stones so as to keep it in the bottom of the swamp and it would be left in this position for three weeks. When this period had elapsed it would be taken out and spread very lightley on the field so as to let it bleach.
When this was done it would be taken home, made into sheaves and put to dry over the rafters. It was on that account that the field was called the "flax hole" one. Long ago there was a priest in Newmarket and the people around the parish and in some of the adjoining parishes ran short of hay. This priest told the people to set a field of furze seed and while to cut them and give them to the cattle, and in this way they could spare the hay and in nearly every farm there was a "furze field" so that it(continues on next page)- Collector
