- Beggars were treated very kindly. They gave them a night's lodging, putting down a bed of straw in the kitchen for them. In the morning they got their breakfast and a penny before leaving. The farmers' wives gave beggars a basin of brown flour or a basin of Indian meal and very often some potatoes. These they sold in the towns. This gave rise to an old saying by the old people of an idle person:"He has the world for a potato garden"
All beggars long ago carried a bag on their backs. On receiving alms the beggars usually said"May God increase your store"
