  1. Accounts are given by the old people in connection with the kind of houses which existed in this district in former times.
    All these houses were nearly all thatched, and on those that were slated, the slate was of an inferior kind. Whatever slate was used, was nearly all got in Benduff Slate Quarry.
    At that time a lot of people used to grow wheat, because the wheaten straw was very good for thatching, and those that had not that, had to use rushes. Those who were not good thatchers, had to employ men that were noted thatchers. The most of these old houses consisted only of a kitchen, and those that a room, had only a very small one. They used be only about seven feet in height on the outside.
    These old houses used to be very badly ventilated, and on that account they used to have very bad air in them. In those that had not a loft, the bed used to be always placed in the kitchen near the fireplace The fireplace was generally always situated at the gable wall, but in some houses it was placed in the corner. There were generally always two small windows in them, one door,
