  1. About sixty years ago there was a man in Gurrane named Mr. McCarthy and he used to go around the county thatching houses. He used to thatch them with the straw of wheat and he had a big needle about two feet long. First of all he used to put on a row of thatch and then sew it with the needle and a string cord. He used to be outside on the house and there used to be another man inside. He used to drive in the needle through the roof and the man inside used to drive it out again in a different place and they used to sew away like that until they had the row finished. Then they used to put on another row and do the same again until they had the two sides of the house thatched.
