- Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction and if the following espisode[sic] is true enormous wealth lies buried in one of our isles in the form of bullion.
About the year 1749 a full-rigged ship lost her rudder in mid-Atlantic and she was driven by the westerly winds on the rugged coast of Carthy's Island. The ship was laden with maize and was bound from Melbourne to Southhampton, but she had also on board twelve steel cases of gold stolen by the captain who was a pirate.
The crew of the ship shifted the cases and buried them somewhere along the coast of the Island, which is all of a sandy nature.
When all was secreted safely away the story says the captain drew his pistol and shot the seven members of his crew.
In the hope of being sometime rescued from this prison the captain was travelling the island when(continues on next page)
