- Long ago the old people bought tobacco and whiskey, and sold it again to make profit. There were four of these people in this area. One of them whose name was Mary Regan lived in Gunpoint in an old house, now owned by Mike Donovan. She sold whiskey without any licence, and all the old people bought it as they all liked whiskey, and she made a little money in that way to keep herself. There was another one in Ballybrack who sold tobacco and made a little money on that also. His name was Paul Bourke. There was a third in Beakeen named Paul Coursey. He also sold tobacco without a licence, and he made a little profit on it. There was another old woman living in Lowertown in a small little house, and she also sold tobacco. There were a big number of young lads in Dreenane and Lowertown during that time, and they were all eager for a smoke. They hadn't any money to buy tobacco from this old woman, and so when they went for the tobacco, they always carried potatoes or something to her and it pleased her(continues on next page)
