    three houses. They dared not refuse, or if they did, they were put out of their homes in three days. They all signed and paid what they could, but some gave up in despair and went off to America. Then Father Holland came to Goleen. When he saw the state the Catholics were in, he went to Cork and interceded with the merchant for the people and he brought the balance down from fifty pounds each to thirty six pounds each, and the remaining people paid that.
    If Mr Hull wanted an urgent message, he was sure to rely on the Dreenane people because that was the nearest place to him, and Dreenane was persecuted from him. He would order them to go to Skibbereen or Bantry in the middle of the night for a message for him.
