    As swift as the wind over the green hill she flew,

    We started from the fair with spirit light and hearty,
    Behind Mcharty's mare.
    Mcarty held the rains and Murphy held Mcarty,
    And the whiskey held their brains and made them light and hearty, Moloney tumbled out behind,
    And there we let him lay sure I thought I'd never tell of the mare that ran away.

    The mare then kicked up behind and struck old Patsy Fagan,
    And knocked him on the ground till all his bones were aiken,
    The cart was knocked to smithereens and we were all astray,
    And we thought we'd never live to tell of the mare that ran away.
