Straw-boys always attend at weddings they arrive about midnight in groups of three or four and are treated to all they care to drink; they are always well-disguised in funny suits decorated with straw (hence the name) and crazy old hats with feathers dancing in them, and on the whole they add to the sport of the wedding, and give rise to much cause for controversey as to who they are and where they hail from.
Pancake Tuesday is the last day for marrying, that is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. On the evening pancakes are made in every house, and a great feast follows, at which every member of the family must be present, to eat enough before the Lent begins I suppose, (ang) and give a proper send off to "The Shrovetime."
