    waterfall seemed to acquire a deeper and more sepulchral note.
    Then came night but no comforting watch-fire or sentinels on the battlements greeted it, nor did the bugle-call announce sunset.
    Night had come again to Downdaniel night of silvery moonlight and stars that gleamed by the thousands in the heavens. The red glare of the still smoking castle (flicked) flickered occasionally with a lurid glow, as through a dragon snorted in its sleep. An owl hooted from the depths of a nearby forest ; the shrill voice of the otter-dog [about?] to make a kill rang out across the calm surface of the river, and overhead the [back?] wings of bats whined ghostily.
    It was disolation made more desolate.
