    They could not go near the fire with these shoes as the soles would melt and they would stick to the hearth. The shoes with the timber soles were called clogs. There used be a sheet of iron over the timber soles. They could not bend their feet at all with them as they were too strong. The old people sometimes say "Little shoes I had when I was your age".
