  1. Most of us believe that there is some hidden treasure in nearly every county in Ireland. It may have been put there by some tribe in olden times or it may date back to quite recent years. The story which I am about to tell concerns a quantity of gold hidden under a stone. It is a rectangular stone and a white-thorn bush is growing beside it. This bush appears to have been trimmed very carefully in a northward direction. About a hundred years ago a man tried to unearth the treasure but found it impossible. He had always been told by his parents not to go near the stone or to try to cut the bush. Nevertheless he did not heed their warning as he did not believe that it was guarded by a supernatural being. He
