half-doors used be mostly in the houses. Turf was always used for the fire and fir and bog oak was used also. Splinters were mostly used for lighting.
The slate for the houses in this district was obtained a hundred years ago in a slate quarry at "the Cove" three miles to the south of Ballydehob Parish of Schull. The Catholic Church in Ballydehob was roofed with this slate in the year 1821. When this slate quarry closed down slate was got from Benduff (Beann Dubh) near the village of Leap, Skibbereen, Co. Cork.
