  1. There was once an old woman who lived by herself in a little white-washed cottage on the bank of a river. She used dress in a black skirt a brown pull-over and a red handkerchief on her head. It is said that she lived in the loneliest spot in the village and
    that the ghosts were to be see there every winter's night at about ten o'clock.
    She used not be so much afraid till one night a big man came up to her as she was putting the sign of the cross on herself and he said "you dare not do that or I will put you to death" and the poor creature took off her head handkerchief and shook it three times in honour of the three persons in one God. When she had that done the man recognized what she was doing and he said "pick your belongings up and come with me." The poor creature did so and on her long journey she thought that she had her money forgotten and when the man heard this he said "if you pull one fistful of hair off your head I will ease your mind about the money and
