  1. There was a holy well situated in Ballintubber. It was situated in a place where an altar of a monastery stood. It was in the Prenal Days that it was first known that there was a holy well there. There were spies all over the country and they were promised five pounds for every priest they caught. The priests went around in plain clothes and worked as gardeners. A priest was passing by the place the monastery was. It was a May morning and he knelt to pray in front of the altar. Suddenly he heard a voice say "take off your shoes you are on holy ground". He looked up to a tree that grew a little away from where he was. He saw a dove in the tree. When he turned round again he saw a beautiful well in front of him.
    The voice then told him that that was Mary's well, and as many would be cured there as heard Mass in front of the altar. The priest went his way and reported the matter to all the people round about. Thousands of people came from all over Ireland to be cured. Every blind person came thereto be cured. They had only to dip their heads in the water and say "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, Amen.
    There was a disbeliever in the district or village. In mockery he brought an old blind
