- (continued from previous page)to do this feat and the Englishman bet that they would not be able to find a man in Roscommon county able to do it. A man in the crowd accepted the challenge and said he would find one. It was arranged to have him at the following market. He went for Sean and the contest took place. The Englishman threw the two half hundred weights over the beam of the scale. Sean did so also. He then threw the two half hundreds over the scale and caught them before they reached the ground. Sean then put the chain through four half hundred weights and threw them over the scale. The Englishman was unable to do this.
When he wished to go to Boyle he could shorten his journey by some miles by crossing a little river that lay between him and the Boyle road. He used to take the wheels off his horse cart and carry one under each arm across the river on a foot bridge. He then carried over the body of the cart.
In those days hunting on horse back was common among the gentry of Roscommon. One day the hunt was crossing Sean's land and the horses frightened his cows. This angered Sean and he complained to one of the huntsmen who had no sympathy for his complaint but made a blow of the whip at him but Sean caught him(continues on next page)
