- (continued from previous page)in-law came into a house she found it devoid of house-linen. In olden times "Straw-boys" went to the house, and demanded money and drink from the newly-married couple, and very often demanded to dance with the bride. This custom is still upheld in many districts, but very often the persons responsible have to answer for their indecent behaviour at the next District Court. Forty years ago a custom was in vogue in which the "best man" broke a cake on the head of the bride, while standing on the treshold of his new home, with the object of bringing good luck on the married pair.
Very often when a man wed secondly he brought his wife in on the window, in a house on which there was but one door; as it was considered very unlucky for the second wife to enter by the same door through which the first wife was carried out.
A story is told in the Boyle district concerning a man who wed secondly. His second wife refused to enter by the window, preferring to enter by the door instead. While entering, however, she got severely crushed(continues on next page)- Collector
