It is supposed by the local people that if rain falls on the fifteenth of July that there will be rain for forty days after. They say this because Saint Swithin died on the fifteenth of July and it was raining. Saint Swithin is supposed to have asked when he was dying not to be buried until it would be fair. It rained for forty days and he could not be buried until the forty days were over.
No machinery may be worked on Saint Martin's Day because the Saint it is said was ground in a mill. One time Knockvicar creamery was in operation on this day, and after a few minutes work the chains were all broken so the men there had to give up work. This creamery is about three and a half miles away from Bridgecartron School. From that day until now no creamery ever tried to carry on its work on Saint Martin's Day.
