  2. On Shrove Tuesday night in olden times, nearly all the young boys and girls of this district used to meet in some certain house in which they would have a big dance. The people nowadays never have any dances on this night, to celebrate the Shrove. The period of the year from December to March and from April to November, was called Shrove-tide in olden times. It is now called "Suraft" locally. By "Suraft" is meant the time of the year, when marriages may take
