    An old man named Stephen Mullaly who was over 100 years of age...

    An old man named Stephen Mullaly who was over 100 years of age when he died about 20 years ago told my father that he was at the building of most of the houses of this town after the brewery was built. While digging in the north side of The Square they found a lot of human bones but strange to say no skulls. He gave that information to Canon Carrigan for his history. It was strange that the skulls were missing. That was the place where people believe the rath was, from which the town got its name. Rathdowney means the "rath of the green field" or the rath of the church" but old people thought it had something to do with the name of the Barony "Clondonagh" which is Cluan Donagh. Nobody knows who Donagh or Donnacad was
