- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)name from Earl Downs, an English man who was in possession of a local mansions about the year of the Battle of Waterloo, 1815. He acquired the mansion and estate about this time and named it after his son, an infant who died when three months old.
Earl Downs was an officer in the British army and was fighting in the Napoleonic Wars on the continent. He obtained leave a few days before the Battle of Waterloo in order to get married, and so was in England when the battle took place. His brother officers looked on his behaviour as cowardly and it was said he was never thought much about after that event. He left the army, bought the mansion, now called Bert House, and lived in comparative seclusion.
He was a very harsh landlord and looked on the people in the district as if they were wild animals.
