  1. During the penal days the Shankill children attended a hedge-school - the exact spot is unknown, but some say definitely it was in a field near Cráin Ruadh called Lehárd. In those days about twenty pupils attended the school. The master got five shillings per head for about twenty which approximated annually £5. He was dieted by the neighbours. A grand-uncle of the present John Walsh of Cráin Ruadh taugth there.
