  1. There was once a man who lived in Freneystown and he used to go to a neighbour's house to play cards. In a field there was a grove of trees and a path ran through the centre of the grove. The man and his companions had to cross this field on his way home. Each night a figure of a woman travelled this path and they had to step aside to let her pass.
    One night he told his companions that he would ask her why she passed there every night, so they went on their way.
    When the man came to the spot in the grove, the woman was there as usual.
    All his companions stepped aside but he stopped her and said "Damn you, what are you doing here every night?". She replied "You have damned me, so meet me here tomorrow night at the same time and then I will tell you, and if you fail to come I will burn the house over your head".
    The man went home. Next day he went to the priest but the priest said "I cannot do anything for you as you have damned the soul". Then he went to a friar and
