    Humphrey O' Sullivan came to Callan about one hundred years ago...

    Humphrey O'Sullivan came to Callan about one hundred years ago; he came with his father from Kerry. His father was a teacher and he started a hedge school in the town, when he died Humphrey continued the teaching.
    There was a tombstone erected by Humphrey O'Sullivan over his father's grave where he is now buried himself and on it is written:
    Fe chlár na cloiche na cadhla go trom
    Go musglochaidh buabhall duisighthe an domhain;
    Tá corp criosduidhe fial fulámh
    Donnchadh ghaodhal glórach Ua Suiliobháin
    A mhac Mhicheál fé na ucht
    Da caomhna ó Fearthainn is fuacht
    A bhean Mháire le mo thaobh
    "Is clann Amhlaoibhe cumhra caoimh
    Guidh orrtha a leightheoir chrabha,
