  1. It was the custom in the locality about thirty years ago that nine or ten men would buy a quarter barrel of beer, and sit on the side of the road on Sundays drinking it. One day an old man named Peters, who liked beer but had no money to buy it, passed by. Contrary to his expectations he was not invited to join the party, so he made up the following rhyme:-
