    was called an oven, a griddle, or pot oven. oat bread was baked in front of the fire standing against a support, generally a stool-made of wood, griddle bread was often made. Special kind of bread was made on some occasions: Currant cake at Christmas and New Year, Apple cake at November Day, pan cakes on Shrove Tuesday, potato-cake and boxty on Christmas eve.
