  1. In former times candle making was carried on in the district. The candles were made from rushes and then were soaked in grease. Baskets and creels were used for carrying turf or other things. No one would be without a creel then. They were made form hazel rods.
    The forge-work was also carried on. Gates, harrows, firecranes, and grates were made in the forge. The spades were not made as they had to be got from the factory. Spinning was the chief industry of the country women. When they had the wool spun, they brought it to the weaver to weave into flannel.
